You’ve got questions? I’ve got answers.

What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is someone who provides physical, mental, and emotional support to mama’s and their families post birth. While a birth doula provides support during labor and delivery, a postpartum doula provides support during the postpartum period or 4th trimester. A postpartum doula provides assistance with the baby and sets the mom up for success so she can focus on healing and recovery after giving birth! By the time the baby turns 3 or 4 months, the mama should feel confident enough for the doula to transition out of care for that family. For more info about the role of a doula, click here.

What all do you do as a postpartum doula?

I provide non-medical support to families. My primary role is to best support the mama. So whatever would be best to make her feel most supported & cared for. For every mama that will look different. Sometimes it will look like providing daytime support so the mama can bond with her baby and get a routine established for herself. Sometimes, it will mean taking overnight shifts so she can get a good night’s sleep!

What is the difference between a PPD and a babysitter or nanny?

A PPD is professionally trained and has a certification to be able to specifically care for and serve the mama and her newborn during the 4th trimester. This means the doula can give non medical advice including breastfeeding, feeding schedules, recovery from giving birth, nutrition, maintaining good emotional and physical health, sleeping/ swaddling, etc..  A postpartum doula also has a referral network of professionals that they utilize if needed.

What did the certification process look like to be a PPD?

I got my certification through Maternity Wise! After completing the online coursework and reading through the required materials, I volunteered for a few families as their PPD as part of the certification. I loved getting to have that experience under my belt!
